Kristoff St. John Prepares For Emmy Night

KristoffStJohn.jpg

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Kristoff St. John (Neil) missed seeing his name announced live on television for his nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor! "I thought I'd find out today on THE TALK," he says, "but then I heard it came out East Coast time."

The actor was also taking the nod with a grain of salt. "I've been in the business a long time," St. John muses, "and it is a wonderful feeling to be part of the elite pack, but the truth is all the actors and actresses, the people who work behind the scenes, we're all doing it for the same reason. We're all part of that elite group, but for this brief shining moment, there are five in a category and one will be singled out and be able to hold the gold trophy."

While St. John had lots of good material to choose from, he earned his nod with the episode where Shemar Moore (ex-Malcolm) returned for a brief visit. "The second one I considered as well," he admits, "but I thought the first one had a little bit more meat and substance to it. There was a consistent, steady back and forth between these two brothers, and I felt it had a better chance than the other episodes."

Although thrilled for his fellow co-workers who are also in the running for awards, St. John confesses he's surprised his on-screen son isn't with them. "I'm very disappointed that Bryton [James, Devon] didn't get a nomination after he did such really raw, moving emotional work last year."

A two-time Emmy winner, St. John says he's never prepared an acceptance speech in advance. "I'm going to cast my fate to the wind," he declares, "and if I should be so lucky and walk up on that stage... we'll see what happens. I'm in a touch category. I'm honored to be invited to the dance!"

Y&R's Tognoni Reacts To Emmy Nom!

GinaTognoniGal.jpg

Gina Tognoni (Phyllis, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) was back home in New Jersey when the 2015 Daytime Emmy Award nominations were announced, and was reminded by her mother that morning to tune in to THE TALK for the announcement.

"I got myself situated, I was trying to eat my lunch," she recalls. "I'm telling you, I'm psyched at all the nominations. I'm psyched that Hunter King (Summer) got nominated. Christian [Jules LeBlanc, Michael]... it's a very nice year. I like the nominations!"

However, immediately after learning she had snagged a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress, Tognoni was unable to get ahold of her mother! "She won't pick up her phone!" the actress laughs. "I'm thinking, where are you now that I need you? But you know what she's probably doing? She's probably talking to all of her friends. My mom is the biggest cheerleader of my life. Both my parents are. But she really loves all this. She loves the show."

To earn the nomination, Tognoni submitted the scene with Peter Bergman (Jack) as Phyllis confronted Jack about Kelly. "Basically it was a scene about 'Did you love another woman? Did you fall for another woman?'" she says. "I just loved it. It was a well-written scene."

Tognoni is grateful for her good fortune this year, but disappointed that co-stars Bergman and Cady McClain (Kelly) didn't receive nods. "I was surprised because she's so good," she admits. "There were a few surprises. I'm surprised that Peter didn't get nominated. He's so celebrated and he really is a big part of why what I submitted I was so proud of, because he is so incredible to work with. You can't do it alone."

Y&R's King Gets Nasty!

HunterKingGal.jpg

On THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, Summer continues to be tormented by the mysterious murder of her hubby Austin, but her portrayer, Hunter King, takes on the role of tormentor in the big screen movie, A Girl Like Her, which opens nationwide in select theaters on Friday, March 27.

King portrays Avery, a teenager viciously bullying a former friend, Jessica (played by Lexi Ainsworth, GENERAL HOSPITAL's ex-Kristina.) "It was a really difficult role [because of the subject matter], but most of the film was improvised, which was a really different way to shoot a film," shares the Emmy winner. "The director [Amy S. Weber], who also wrote the film, gave us an outline and an idea of what she wanted in the scene. We'd brainstorm about what she wanted for us to achieve and portray, and then we'd go into the scene and improvise. It really added a different element to it, and was something that I've never done before. It made the film so real!"

So real, in fact, that King admits she had a hard time letting the role go when she left the studio. "It was very difficult and upsetting," she concedes. "But it's also so important. Everybody, of course, wants to solve bullying. What's so different about this film is that it doesn't just show [bullying] from the victim's point of view, or the bully's side or the bystander's side. As the director explained it, people who were [emotionally] hurt end up hurting other people because that's their defense mechanism. They don't want to feel the pain, so they wind up hurting other people to make themselves feel better. That's why we need to promote dialogue about it."

Hear more from the actress about the challenging role in the issue of CBS Soaps In Depth on sale now, and check out the film by clicking here.

Vanessa_Ray14196.jpg

Congratulations are in order for Vanessa Ray, who currently stars on CBS's primetime drama BLUE BLOODS, but soap fans will remember as AS THE WORLD TURNS' Teri — she recently became engaged to boyfriend Landon Beard!

According to Hello Magazine, Beard proposed to the actress at one of their favorite spots in New York City, Pier 84 on the Hudson River, despite the frigid East Coast temperatures. And photos of the actual proposal were taken by a conveniently-placed tourist who was revealed to be Ray's good friend Kelly Sullivan (Sage, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS)! "Totally unbeknownst to me, he had Kelly fly out from L.A.," she confided to the magazine. "She was disguised in a black wig pretending to be a tourist taking pictures during the whole thing."

Best wishes to the happy couple for a lifetime together!

UPDATE: Rowell's Lawyer Responds To CBS Claim

Rowell.jpg

One of the attorneys representing former THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla) in her lawsuit against CBS and Sony argues that the corporations' claims that the actress' case is unconstitutional is... well, false.

"CBS and Sony's position is no surprise, but it's certainly misguided," says Dan Stormer of Hadsell & Stormer, co-counsel for Rowell. "Nothing in the Constitution exempts Hollywood from adhering to this country's laws prohibiting retaliation against employees who oppose racial discrimination. The core of this case is Ms. Rowell's free speech -- her right to speak out about the lack of diversity at her workplace without reprisal."

Tell us in the comments below, whose side are you on?

CBS And Sony Argue Rowell's Suit Uconstitutional

Victoria_Rowell02318.jpg

The lawsuit between Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) and CBS and Sony Pictures Television as taken another twist. The Wrap is reporting that the defendants have filed a motion in U.S. district court in New York to have the actress' lawsuit dismissed.

In a memo, attorneys for CBS and Sony claim Rowell's suit is "a blatant attempt by Plaintiff to force her way back onto a daytime television soap opera, after she voluntarily resigned from her role in 2007."

The memo also argues that casting and script decisions are protected free speech and ordering CBS and Sony to make those choices for Rowell's benefit would go against the First Amendment.

In addition to asking for the case to be dismissed, attorneys for CBS and Sony are requesting the venue be changed to California, where Y&R tapes. As this ongoing real-life soap opera continues, we'll keep bringing you updates as we get them!

Is It The End For Y&R's Michael?

LeBlanc8.jpg

Fans took to the Internet months ago to share their fear that THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Christian Jules LeBlanc might soon be leaving the show after his alter ego, Michael, was diagnosed with cancer.

"That had a lot to do with the show losing Billy [Miller, ex-Billy] and Michelle [Stafford, ex-Phyllis]," says the Emmy winner. "I went up to [executive producer] Jill [Farren Phelps] and said, 'Oh, you're gonna get hell for this! But that's the nature of social media. It morphed into where [former Y&R hairstylist] George Guzman, a good friend of mine, walked in and said, 'Do you know what they're saying now? That I'm quitting the show because you've been fired!'"

While that's not true, what is true? Soaps In Depth talked to LeBlanc about dealing with such a challenging storyline so near when he lost his own father to cancer. Pick up the magazine for the interview!

Is Y&R's Austin Dead Or Not?

MatthewAtkinsonGal.jpg

For a dead guy, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Austin sure seems to be getting around! Which always begs the question: Is the hunk really dead? Or, given the many lookalikes and twins (Caleb/Cane, Mariah/Cassie, Jeffrey/William) that have sauntered through Genoa City, could fans soon be getting a double dose of Austin with a doppleganger?

"I don't know what's going to happen," admits his portrayer, Matthew Atkinson. "From Day One, Austin has been a very mysterious character, and we haven't figured out much about him. There's a lot of questions we could ask, but no answers just yet! I can't give anything specifically away, I would say you will learn a lot about Austin in the coming weeks."

Right now, viewers are learning a lot in flashbacks, including the stunning revelation that Austin and Abby were having a hot and heavy affair! "When I first came on the show, Melissa [Ordway, Abby] and I talked about how her character is related to everyone, so we thought at some point we were going to have a relationship!" laughs the actor. "I guess that kind of ended up happening! I enjoy working with her; she's such a sweetheart!

"Keep watching," Atkinson adds with a grin. "This is not a predictable storyline at all!"

For more on Austin and Atkinson's future, don't miss our in-depth feature interview in the CBS Soaps In Depth issue on sale Monday, March 23!

Victoria Rowell Speaks Out!

Rowell.jpg

Soaps In Depth was present this morning when former THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla) held a press conference in New York City to discuss her lawsuit against CBS and Sony.

"This is a profound moment for me," the actress shared, "as an African-American woman who wishes to continue to live the American dream. I've always advocated for myself, and was taught to do so after 18 years in foster care. And I advocate for others, and was taught to do so. So this is not about me. This is about myself and the many, many other African-Americans who have been denied the right to perform in front of and behind the camera. Specifically on Y&R."

In her suit, Rowell claims that CBS and Sony have refused to rehire her in retaliation for her being outspoken about the lack of diversity in the daytime community, and particularly on her former show, the top-rated daytime drama. "It is an incestuous industry, and it has retaliated against me," the actress told In Depth at this morning's conference.

We will have more on Rowell's case in an upcoming issue. In the meantime, we want to hear your thoughts on her claim, so please comment below!

Y&R Star Sues CBS And Sony!

Victoria_Rowell02318.jpg

The daytime drama at THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS isn't just in front of the cameras, it's also behind the scenes! According to Daytime Confidential, Victoria Rowell (ex-Dru) is suing both CBS and Sony! The suit alleges that she was not rehired at Y&R in retaliation for her public and private complaints regarding the lack of diversity at Y&R both in front of and behind the camera.

Rowell claims that she reluctantly exited the soap in 2007 after years of racial discrimination described in the complaint. She also claims that since 2010, she has tried to return to Y&R or sister soap THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL but been denied. We will continue following this story and bring you any updates, but in the meantime, sound off with your own views on this lawsuit in the comments!

UPDATE: A CBS spokesperson tells Soaps In Depth: "We were disappointed to learn that, after leaving the cast of "The Young and the Restless" on her own initiative, Ms. Rowell has attempted to rewrite that history through lawyers' letters and a lawsuit that has no merit. We harbor no ill will toward Ms. Rowell, but we will vigorously defend this case."

Y&R' Collins Is Cooking!

CollinsHomeFamily.jpg

Jessica Collins (Avery, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) drops by the Hallmark Channel's HOME & FAMILY show today to chat with hosts Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines about Avery's upcoming storyline and do a cooking segment featuring her famous Crème Brûlée French Toast!

"I love 'make ahead' dishes, which this is," Collins tells Soaps In Depth. "This is one of the easiest things to make because if you can mix things in a bowl you can make it. It's something my mother and aunt would make. It's great for kids because you can make it the night before.

"It's a hobby that turned into a passion that kind of turned into a second career for me," adds Collins, who graduated from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in 2009 and has a Web site dedicated to her culinary creations. "My blog (JessicaCollins.com) is all about making cooking accessible. It's for first-time cooks — beginners, college kids. I sometimes cook a lot fancier in my real-life, but I also use those recipes, too. I don't have a lot of time to plan and make something amazing. My blog is built much more for my lifestyle — I'll come home, put a chicken in the oven, take a bath while it's cooking and then getting out, eating my chicken and watching Y&R with a glass of wine!"

HOME & FAMILY airs on the Hallmark Channel at 10:00 a.m. ET/PT and 9:00 a.m. Central Time. Check out the recipe for Collins' French toast — and many other tasty dishes — at JessicaCollins.com.

Has Y&R Recast Drucilla?

BeyerRowell.jpg

When THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Neil discovers that his wife has been cheating on him, will his presumed-dead ex, Drucilla (previously played by Victoria Rowell), be the one to offer a shoulder to cry on? That is the latest rumor making the rounds, with speculation that Troy Beyer has been cast as Lily's mom.

As it turns out, an insider tells Soaps In Depth that there is no truth to the rumor that the former DYNASTY troublemaker will be taking over the role. Chalk this one up to another day, another rumor!

Meet Y&R's New Kyle!

LachlanBuchanan.jpg

Kyle Abbott hasn't been seen on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS since he went to go work in New York last year. But the soap is bringing Jack's son back to Genoa City, now being played by Australian actor Lachlan Buchanan. "So excited to start my new adventure with the brilliant team at THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS," he posted to Twitter.

The actor may be a newcomer to American soaps, but he's got plenty of sudsy experience, having appeared on Aussie soap HOME AND AWAY (like THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL newbie Ashleigh Brewer (Ivy)!). And since Kyle has been spending time in New York, not Down Under, Buchanan will be doing an American accent for the role!

Are you excited to see Kyle back in town? What would you like to see next for the character? Sound off in the comments!

Is Heinle Out At Y&R?

Amelia.jpg

With new headwriter Charles Pratt, Jr penning the futures of THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS characters, there have been rumors that a major character is on their way out of Genoa City. And while some fans worry that Michael's cancer could lead to a tragic exit for Christian Jules LeBlanc, the big rumor now is that Amelia Heinle's Victoria will not be returning after visiting her son, Reed!

News that the actress deleted her Twitter account added fuel to the fire, but an insider at Y&R tells Soaps In Depth that there are no truth to the rumors and that Heinle's deletion of her Twitter account has nothing to do with her status at the show.

There are definitely big doings coming up on Y&R (just wait for our February Sweeps issue on sale on 1/26 for more details!), so it's not impossible that one or more actors could be on their way out. And we'll do our best to keep on top of all the rumors and bring you the truth as we find it out!

Y&R Star Passes

BeauKazer.jpg

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS family suffered a devastating blow on Tuesday, December 30, with the passing of Beau Kazer at the age of 63. The actor originated the role of Brock Reynolds in 1974 and made frequent appearances on the soap over the years. His most recent was in 2013 for the funeral of on-screen mother, Katherine. Kazer's wife, Sharon Alkus, would like fans to know that Y&R was a huge part of his life that he was very proud of.

"I remember the first time I heard your voice and thought wow! This guy should have been in radio!" Daniel Goddard (Cane) wrote on Facebook to his late co-star. "Then I watched you act and was blown away with how natural and honest your performances always were. God Bless."

Our sympathies to his family and friends.

Rogers Re-Ups At Y&R!

TristanRogers.jpg

Tristan Rogers revealed on Twitter that he will be sticking around THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS as Colin for a while longer! "I am at Y&R for another year," he posted. "Doesn't mean I won't do other stuff. But my mind is there and I want to make it prominent in daytime."

The actor is due back on set Tuesday, January 6, but as for what's to come for Colin, he remains tight-lipped. "So what can I say?" he writes. "Not a whole lot. However, it seems more compelling than some of the 'fare' we've had of late. Think you'll like it."

What would you like to see next for Colin in Genoa City? Sound off in the comments!
