B&B Exec Leads Important Crusade

MelodyEdScott.jpg

When he's not overseeing the production of THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL for his day job, supervising producer Ed Scott is trying to save the world — literally. The TV exec and husband of Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) is the CEO of the Save The Earth Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping raise both awareness and funding for environmental research in collaboration with major universities.

The organization has planned several exciting events for Earth Week this week. On Tuesday, April 22, Chicago's No. 1 rock station, The Drive 97.1 will auction off a Candy Apple Red Fender Standard Stratocaster signed by Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler. For more information check out the STE auction site. The foundation is also sponsoring a major symposium on Saturday, April 26th featuring the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the focus of which will be the problem of marine debris.

"There are three huge garbage patches in our oceans right now, one of which is in the North Pacific and covers an area the size of Texas," Scott explains. "The fish eat the plastic, and god only knows what it does to us when it gets into our system. The other major problem is container ships dropping big containers. Every year hundreds fall off of ships in rough seas, and they're really fouling up the water."

Scott points to a new book called Emotion For The Ocean by Chet Forrest, which explains, in layman's terms, the devastation being done to our oceans and marine life. "The oceans are our lifeblood," says Scott. "I don't think enough people understand the severity of what is happening, but we have to get it resolved. We can't keep destroying the oceans like we're doing."

For more information about Scott's efforts on behalf of Save The Earth, visit http://www.savetheearth.org/.

Gaskill Takes On The Bard!

BrianGaskill-192.jpg

From the "Just when I thought I'd heard everything" files has come STRIPPING SHAKESPEARE, a provocative new Web series from the We Make Movies filmmakers collective in Los Angeles. In each episode, famous scenes from The Bard's works are set in a scintillating new context, replete with professional pole dancers and burlesque performers. Who knew Shakespeare could be so sexy? Daytime TV veteran Brian Gaskill (Dylan, GUIDING LIGHT; ex-Ozzie, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL; Bobby, ALL MY CHIlDREN; Rafe, PORT CHARLES), who is a member of the collective, appears in the episode airing this Sunday, April 13.

"My friend, Nicol Razon, produced it," Gaskill shares. "The series is about her taking her love of Shakespeare and putting it into a format that is maybe gonna raise some eyebrows, but it's also gonna promote conversation and get people to pay attention to what the filmmaker is doing to be creative."

This Sunday's episode is based on The Taming Of The Shrew with Gaskill reciting the lines of Petruchio opposite Razon as Kate. But don't look for the traditional, 16th century costuming and staging. Rather, it plays out in a much more imaginative way. "It's more like artistic music videos of Shakespeare," offers Gaskill, who first began performing the great poet's work back in high school. To experience it for yourself, visit Strippingshakespeare.com or the We Make Movies YouTube channel here.

Stars Added To THE BAY!

MossKanan.jpg

Two hunks from THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL — one past, one future — have joined the cast of the Emmy-nominated Web soap THE BAY! Ronn Moss (ex-Ridge) is set to play John Blackwell, the former district attorney of Bay City, while Sean Kanan (who returns to B&B as Deacon in June), has joined the Internet serial as press secretary Kenneth Allen. That role previously played by Brody Hutzler (ex-Patrick, DAYS OF OUR LIVES; ex-Cody, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS).

Why the change with Kanan taking over for Hutzler? "Brody is a good friend of mine and a wonderful talent," Gregori Martin, THE BAY's executive producer/creator, tells Soaps In Depth. "He's busy with some other great projects at the moment, and this gave us an opportunity to go in another direction with the character. Sean and Nicolas [Coster, Jack] have a great dynamic. Sean is bringing a lot of humor to the role."

Moss and Kanan aren't the only newcomers sailing into THE BAY this season! Judi Evans (Adrienne, DAYS) will play Katherine, John's wife, and Patrika Darbo (ex-Nancy, DAYS) has been cast as Mickey, who runs Patrick's Roadhouse.

Watch for an exclusive preview of THE BAY featuring interviews with Martin, Mary Beth Evans (Sara; Kayla, DAYS) and Terri Ivens (Orchid; Simone, ALL MY CHILDREN) in the next two issues of In Depth, on sale Monday, April 21, and Monday, April 28. Chapter 12 of THE BAY streams via the Blip and Roku networks and services beginning Thursday, May 1. For more information, visit www.thebaytheseries.com.

B&B's Wagner CALLS THE HEART

JackWagnerHeart.jpg

There's new romance brewing on Hallmark Channel's period drama WHEN CALLS THE HEART: Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco, GENERAL HOSPITAL) has joined the cast as Mountie Forensic Investigator Bill Avery, and he's bringing the heat! First introduced in last week's episode, Avery arrived on horseback to find out the truth about the deadly explosion in Coal Valley that killed many of the locals, including the husband and son of Abigail Stanton (played by EDGE OF NIGHT's Lori Loughlin, Jody). Might Wagner's character help the shaky widow find her footing? Behind the scenes, it was the other way around. "Lori's an old friend, and a terrific actress," Wagner confides of his scene partner and pal on the Vancouver set. "I play golf with her husband and we've run in the same circles for years."

In "Prelude To A Kiss," the season finale airing Saturday, March 29, at 9:00 p.m. EST, Wagner's character will be back to further pursue Abigail while at the same time, delving deeper into the dangerous mystery. "My character gets beat up while he's at the crime scene by some masked men," Wagner reveals. "So it unfolds to be a real good versus evil situation."

With the fate of the town, as well as Abigail's family name, on the line, the evidence that Avery has collected becomes all-important. Who will triumph? Abigail pins her hope on the visiting Circuit Judge Jedidiah Black (James Brolin), but will she be able to continue living in the small town — let alone find love again — in the aftermath? "They leave the show with cliffhangers," Wagner says of the possibility of his return. "So hopefully Hallmark will pick it up for a second season!"

Kanan Back On B&B!

SeanKananGal.jpg

Port Charles won't have A.J. Quartermaine to kick around anymore! TV Guide is reporting that Sean Kanan has reached a mutual agreement with GENERAL HOSPITAL executive producer Frank Valentini to step down as A.J., and should last air in April. The actor admits that the lack of a romantic storyline for his character made him feel like A.J. didn't have much of a future on the soap.

Instead, Kanan is going to be returning to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL to reprise the role of Deacon, the schemer he also brought to sister soap THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS for a time. He will reportedly first air on the CBS sudser on Friday, June 13. Do you think Hope or Brooke will be happy to see him?

Daytime Emmy Pre-Noms Announced!

EmmyTrophies.jpg

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, in cooperation with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, have announced the pre-nominees in the acting categories for the 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Due to a rule change, the on-line versions of ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE were able to join GENERAL HOSPITAL, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS and DAYS OF OUR LIVES in the broadcast categories; However, they only scored pre-nominations in the younger performer slots.

An on-line ballot featuring all entrants in each of the six categories were sent to judges who viewed clips of their work before selecting their top ten performers in each category. However, due to ties, Outstanding Lead Actress contains 12 performers and Supporting Actor has 13. The candidates who received the highest number of votes will now advance to the blue ribbon screening round set to begin on Wednesday, March 26. This will determine the final nominees and ultimate winner.

The final list on nominees will be announced on Thursday, May 1, but you can find the full list of all the pre-nominations after the break. Did your favorites make the cut? Who would you vote for?

A Who's Who Guide For BEACON HILL!

BeaconHillCast.jpg

Next Wednesday, March 5, marks the launch of an exciting new Web soap, BEACON HILL! New media pioneer Crystal Chappell (Dani, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL; Olivia, GUIDING LIGHT, etc.) is part of the team behind the drama, which centers on two Boston families at opposite ends of the political spectrum.

With political rivalries, romances gone bad, blackmail and family dysfunction, BEACON HILL has all the makings of a must-see series! In anticipation of the show's premiere, Soaps In Depth chatted up some of the top players in the drama for the scoop!

Alicia Minshew (Sara Preston)
"Sara left the love of her life, Kate, for this reporting job, and the break-up was painful. She's now come back to Beacon Hill for a job and bumps into Kate, so it's reigniting feelings. There are issues with Sara and her grandfather, whom Kate is now working with, and she has a tumultuous relationship with her mother, who is a drinker. She's trying to be a good reporter but stay true to her family. Everything kind of gets mixed up and muddled!"

Sarah Brown (Katherine "Kate" Wesley)
"When Crystal sent me the script, I read all 12 episodes and called her immediately. I originally wanted to play the character of Sara -- I understood where she's coming from. But Katherine ended up being much more of a challenge. I love every bit of this."

B&B Goes On Location In The Middle East!

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL has traveled all over the globe for location shoots in the past, but now the soap is headed for the first time to the United Arab Emirates! According to TV Guide, Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) and Don Diamont (Bill) will be headed to Abu Dhabi and Dubai next month for a story set to air probably in time for May Sweeps.

Apparently, the idea was sparked when Lang asked for time off to participate in a triathlon in Abu Dhabi and B&B executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell suggested that they tag along to shoot some location footage at the same time! Hopefully the actress will still have the energy to make sure Brooke can keep Bill and Ridge from tearing each other apart!

Stars Team Up For Good Cause

BrooksKruger.jpg

It's been a full decade since Kelly Kruger played Mac's teen angst on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS. Now, there will be real grown-up drama ahead when she appears in the Monday, February 24, episode of ABC's CASTLE titled "Room 147." In it, a mystery unfolds when more than one person confesses to the murder of a struggling young actor. "I'm playing the girlfriend of the victim," Kruger reveals. "I'm interviewed by both Castle and Beckett, and it was very emotional."

Kruger says that the show's stars — who happen to be fellow Canadians — were key to making the long shooting day easier. "They were the most humble and most welcoming people I think I've ever worked with," she enthuses. "I was also really sick that day, which would have been challenging somewhere else, but they looked after me and made sure that I was okay. They were really sweet."

The actress — together with boyfriend Darin Brooks (Wyatt, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL) — is also partnered with an organization called Aid Still Required on another exciting project. "When a natural disaster hits, it's a big deal and people are quick to donate and help," she explains. "But years later, when the disaster has left the headlines, people are still living in the worst conditions and not getting much help."

In an effort to assist those still affected by the tragic 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Kruger and Brooks are trying to raise $15,000 to purchase a seed oil press. With it, the Haitian farms could produce a bio-diesel fuel from their newly-planted jatropha trees and thereby contribute to a self-sustaining economy.

"We wondered: If we don't do something, who will?" she says. As an incentive to donate, Kruger and Brooks are offering everything from wristbands and tote bags to B&B set visits and even autographed scripts. "Visit www.healhaitinow.org to donate and learn more," she says of the campaign that's running through Sunday, March 16. "If everyone would donate just $10, we would reach our goal."

B&B Star Turns Storyteller

DanMcVicar.jpg

Dan McVicar (ex-Clarke, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL) is taking on a new role — comic book creator. The actor has teamed with Italian screenwriter Roberto Pretti and artist Gianluca Gugliotta (DC Comics' Mister Terrific) to bring to life The Last Cavalier, a graphic novel that tells the story of Michael Cross, an adventurer who returns to Italy to help locate the missing Shroud Of Turin!

"I'm very excited about this project, and I see it having life in many forms," McVicar tells Soaps In Depth. "It's a combination of fantasy, history, spiritualism, and action. Michael Cross is a mature hero, happily married to a loving wife, Anna, who gets caught up in the story as well." Perhaps influenced by the triangles he was involved in as Clarke, McVicar says that Michael's got one going on, too, with the character of Marta De Paolis. "As writers, we know a lot about her, but readers won't — for a while."

The Last Cavalier is seeking funding through Kickstarter. Interested folks can bid at this link. Backers can receive everything from having their name mentioned on the comic's Web site to having themselves or a friend drawn into the story!

Puppy Love On B&B!

BBdogs.jpg

In case you thought Oliver and Maya's flirting on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL couldn't get any cuter, brace yourself: The couple will have an encounter with two adorable puppies on Monday, February 10, when Brandon McMillan, host of the CBS show LUCKY DOG, drops by to say hi to his friend, Ollie!

McMillan, who rescues shelter dogs and finds them loving families as part of his heartwarming series (which airs Saturday mornings) plays himself in today's episode, though he jokes that viewers will hardly notice him! "Honestly, I didn't think I was going to make it out of CBS Studios with them that day because there were about 80 people on set and they wouldn't let the dogs go!"

Incidentally, the pups making a B&B cameo are ones McMillan rescued from a shelter. "Every year in America, about 1.5 million dogs are euthanized because they can't find homes," he says. "LUCKY DOG is basically a show about second chances, a journey of me rescuing dogs and the process of finding the perfect home for them."

Despite training all sorts of animals for the film and television industry for the last two decades, McMillan says acting isn't necessarily his strong suit. "It never has been," he says, "but it was fun getting my feet wet. If this whole 'dog training' thing doesn't work out, maybe I can become a staple on B&B!"

Exclusive: B&B Star Becomes U.S. Citizen!

JenniferFinnigan.jpg

Jennifer Finnigan (ex-Bridget, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL), a native of Montreal, Canada, is set to become a United States citizen today. "I decided it was finally time," the actress tells Soaps In Depth exclusively. "It would have happened sooner due to the length of time that I've been living here and [also] because I'm married to an American [actor Jonathan Silverman], but I've not really had the time. I know that sounds strange, but I'm never really in town.

"I've been putting off doing jury duty for too long," the actress adds with a laugh.

Ironically, Finnigan won't be sticking around the U.S. for very long following the ceremony, as she'll soon be leaving for Tel Aviv to begin filming her new series, TYRANT. The serialized drama, from the co-creators of HOMELAND, stars Adam Rayner as the young son of a dictator who ends a self-imposed exile to return to his native country for his nephew's wedding. Finnigan plays Molly, his wife and the mother of their two children. The series is set to air on FX this summer.

Who Will Air The Daytime Emmys?

EmmyTrophies.jpg

Cable outlet HLN has broadcast the Daytime Emmy Awards for the past two years, but there won't be a third. "It's fairly definite," Albie Hecht, the network's vice president and general manager, tells Soaps In Depth. "I just want to put a pause on everything and figure out what we're doing before we make any commitments. Shows like [the Daytime Emmys] need commitments in advance to plan and I don't think we can make that commitment."

Hecht, who joined HLN a little over three months ago, says that the decision has been made early so that the National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) can make other plans. "It's only fair to let them look around and let them do what they need to do," the HNL chief adds.

This doesn't mean that the Daytime Emmys won't be on television, however. "Having the show on HLN was a wonderful experience for us," says David Michaels, senior executive director of the Daytime Emmy Awards. "We are currently exploring other avenues so that the Daytime Emmys will have a broadcast home."

For her part, THE TALK's Aisha Tyler would love to see the ceremony return to one of the big three networks. "I think it would be great," she says. "CBS is the number one daytime network. It'd be great to have the Daytime Emmys on the number one daytime network. I think that would make perfect sense!"

Soap Stars Move To BEACON HILL

BeaconHillCast.jpg

A slew of familiar faces are starring in the new Web series BEACON HILL, including Sarah Brown (ex-Claudia, GENERAL HOSPITAL; ex-Agnes, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL) Alicia Minshew (Kendall, ALL MY CHILDREN), and Crystal Chappell (Dani, B&B; Olivia, GUIDING LIGHT) The serial, filmed on location in Boston, was co-created by Jessica Hill and her wife Linda, who is the chief executive officer of Bella Books, a publisher of lesbian fiction.

"BEACON HILL is a political drama set in Boston," Jessica tells Soaps In Depth. "Alicia and Sarah are our two leads, and they play the daughters of two political families in Boston. One's Republican and the other is Democrat. Alicia's character, Sara, and Sarah's character, Katherine, were together [romantically] and they broke up. Our story starts six years later when Sara's grandfather, played by Ron Raines [Carl, OLTL; Alan, GL], has a stroke. Sara, who's living in New York, comes back to Boston and you see dynamics between her family and Katherine start to develop."

The rest of the cast — which reads like a Who's Who of daytime — includes Scott Bryce (Craig, ATWT), Ricky Paull Goldin (Jesse, B&B; Gus, GL), Louise Sorel (ex-Vivian, DAYS), Tina Sloan (Lillian, GL), John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex, OLTL), Jessica Morris (Jen, OLTL), and Melissa Archer (Natalie, OLTL). Also in the cast is newcomer Rebecca Mozo.

BEACON HILL is produced by Bella Productions, the sister company of Bella Books, in association with Chappell's production company, Open Book Productions. Goldin and Emmy-winning actress Hillary B. Smith (Nora, OLTL; Margo, ATWT) serve as producers on the show.

Chappell, who has helmed Web series VENICE and THE GROVE, plays Claire, Sara's mother. How did that work, since there's less than a decade between the two actresses? "I age myself," Chappell confides. "I went without makeup and I wear my hair severely — it's in a twist and high up on top. It's a fun character to play. Claire's husband is gone. My feeling is he couldn't tolerate her family.

"BEACON HILL is a very different show," Chappell adds. "It's a political drama with intrigue and romance revolving around two political families. Jessica and Linda are terrific people and writers. I love working with them!"

BEACON HILL begins streaming on Wednesday, March 5. For more info, check out www.beaconhilltheseries.com

How Will DEVANITY End?

DeVanityS4Poster.jpg

The bed-hopping, back-stabbing, lie-telling DeVanity family returns for their final season this February, and we've got a first look at what to expect from the dysfunctional dynasty featured on the popular Web soap.

"Season 4 will give fans all the answers they're dying for," says creator and star Michael Caruso. It will also feature the introduction of a new character with a very familiar face as Andrea Evans (ex-Tawny, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL; ex-Tina, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) joins the cast as Vivian Price.

"She was a dream to work with," says Caruso, whose alter ego, Jason, is Vivian's son. "She was gracious and excited and the kind of actress that any producer would dream to work with! We were all blown away by her talent!"

AndreaEvansDeVanity.jpg

Caruso admits that he himself was a little star-struck by the soap vet. "We were clearly dealing with a star, but she acted like the girl next door! We all fell in love with her instantly!"

To check out the trailer for Season 4 (or catch any of the previous episodes), head to DeVanity.com... but be warned, this ain't your grandma's soap. (Translation: The DeVanity's sometimes use bad words!)

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL has taken over the airwaves as one of the most popular soap operas in the world, and now they're aiming to conquer the publishing world as well with the announcement of a series of novellas based on the world of the Forresters, Logans and Spencers!

Pan Macmillan and its digital-first imprint, Momentum, will release the books in print and digitally simultaneously. However at this time, print copies will only be available in Australia, while the e-books will be available globally. Established romance authors will work with B&B executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell to craft new tales of love and intrigue. The first two titles, Forbidden Affair and Collison Course, are scheduled for release in February 2014, and the next two books will follow in April.

Gaskill Goes Deep!

GaskillCDcover.jpg

Brian Gaskill grabbed our attention playing emotional characters like GUIDING LIGHT's Dylan, AS THE WORLD TURNS' BJ, and THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Ozzy. Since then, he's been pouring his own emotions into a considerable body of poetry, which he's been recording to share with the world. "When I compiled this new group of poems together, I found that they were much more cohesive and thematic than what was on my last album (Make It Real)," he says. "With this new one, every single piece really did become -- either on purpose or inadvertently -- a reflection of the title, Giving Up Time Travel For The Rain."

In the just-released collection of spoken word recordings, Gaskill shares his thoughts on the everyman quest for personal peace and life acceptance. "It's about living in the moment and not focusing on that pain in the past or your expectations of the future," the poet offers. "It's about just being present -- even if it's raining -- because as we all know, the rain cleanses things and helps them grow."

The artist has also been sharing his insightful thoughts and moving poems about this topic and more via a blog, http://givinguptimetravel.blogspot.com. "There's this 31-day journey that I started in conjunction with this album coming out," he explains. "It's about working to find something new each day that brings me closer to a place of believing -- in the magical, fairytale sense -- in life's possibilities."

Godfrey & Adamson Expecting!

GodfreyAdamson.jpg

Congratulations are in order for a couple of CBS Daytime stars! Linsey Godfrey (Caroline, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL) and Robert Adamson (Noah, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) are expecting their first child!

Adamson posted some sonogram photos on his Facebook page and joked, "Guess What?! How do I tag a future family member? Should I make it a page?" Godfrey is reportedly 11 1/2 weeks pregnant making the baby due sometime next spring.

A rep for B&B confirmed Godfrey's pregnancy, but at this point there was no information as to whether it will be written into the show. So Caroline will either be carrying Rick's baby or else carrying a new line of giant-sized Forrester Creation purses!

Celebrate Thanksgiving With B&B And Y&R!

AdamChelseaBaby.jpg

On Wednesday, November 27, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS will celebrate Thanksgiving as Jack gathers his family to celebrate the holiday and is thrilled by a surprise guest. Meanwhile, the Newmans are still reeling over Nikki's shocking revelation. But over the actual holiday on Thursday and Friday, Y&R will air two repeat episodes honoring the memory of the late Jeanne Cooper (Katherine). First, on Thursday, November 28, they will run the classic episode where Jill and Katherine fight in the Chancellor attic. Then, on Friday, November 29, they will rerun the tribute episode from this past spring where cast members, family and friends gather to celebrate Cooper's life.

And over on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, Hope tries to gather all the Forresters, Logans, Spencers, Fullers and Waltons together to celebrate Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 27, but will everyone be able to put aside their differences for even one day? And on Thursday, November 28, a repeat of the episode where Hope and Liam tie the knot on location in Italy will air. No episode of B&B will air on Friday, November 29.

Enjoy the holiday!
